Tennessee Titans add depth by signing WR Michael Campanaro
By Chris Clark
Just two days after signing DL Bennie Logan, the Titans sign WR Michael Campanaro to a one-year contract. He is expected to appear on special teams.
There is never a bad time to strengthen your roster. And General Manager Jon Robinson continues to do just that to the Titans roster. On Tuesday night, the Titans agreed to terms with Michael Campanaro on a one-year deal.
Campanaro is a wide receiver, as well as a punt returner and kick returner. He’s a former seventh round draft pick out of Wake Forest, drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 2014.
Last season, he had 19 catches for 173 yards, which are career highs for the 27-year-old wide receiver. But, his expertise comes mostly from special teams.
He averaged 10.8 yards on 27 punt returns, and 26.5 yards on kick returns. He had a 77-yard punt return last season versus the Chicago Bears.
With Adoree Jackson likely staying the main punt/kick returner, Campanaro is a solid second option if needed. Head Coach Mike Vrabel may make a decision to alternate Jackson’s and Campanaro’s role, putting one at punt return and the other at kick return.
That is the only way I see him making a real impact, as Campanaro is not expected to challenge any of the Titans top receivers, but will be solid depth for the receiving core.
This is the second depth move by the Titans this week. They signed former Chiefs and Eagles defensive lineman Bennie Logan on Sunday. It’s obvious that depth is important, and these moves might seem like nonsense now, but depth is vital if the Titans make a legitimate run at the Superbowl.
Key Events Coming Up
Now that the Titans uniform event is over, what’s next for them? Here’s what’s next: The NFL will announce schedules, with dates and times, later this week. The home and away opponents were already released earlier in the off-season.
Also, the NFL Draft begins on Thursday April 26th. Players returned to Saint Thomas Sports park on Monday as part of voluntary off-season workouts.
