The Memphis Grizzlies defeat the Atlanta Hawks 103-88 in a game that had their 2018 fourth overall pick score nearly 30 points.
Just a few weeks ago, the Memphis Grizzlies were the third-wheel in a big trade between the Atlanta Hawks and the Dallas Mavericks. The draft day trade put Grizzlies’ fan-favorite Luka Doncic in Dallas and sent Trae Young to Atlanta.
Fast forward to tonight, the Grizzlies are facing Trae Young and the Hawks in game one out of six in the Utah Jazz Summer League.
The Grizzlies got off to a great start. Both 2017 NBA Draft pick Kobi Simmons and 2018 4th overall pick Jaren Jackson Jr. had phenomenal games. Jackson exploded for 29 points, and went 8-for-13 beyond the arc, including a beautiful buzzer beater:
Jackson led the team in scoring, while Simmons followed with 21 points, to give the Grizzlies a 103-88 win over Atlanta.
There is one thing I can say here: Grizzlies fans have a lot to be excited about after tonight’s showing from their first round pick. Although, he isn’t the only one who impressed.
The Grizzlies held Trae Young to a 4-20 outing on the court, and 1-11 beyond the arc. Ouch. That has to feel good for Grizzlies fans, though.
Who defended Young? You guessed it: Grizzlies second round pick Jevon Carter, who put up 10 points versus the Hawks.
Needless to say, the future is promising in Memphis. The Grizzlies won the game, but even if they lost, you have to be impressed by Jackson.
Let’s try not to overreact with one game though. There is still PLENTY of basketball to play – and the regular season is still months away. Memphis did fantastic last year in the Summer League, but we all know how the regular season turned out.
One could argue that Memphis is a legit playoff contender with a healthy Mike Conley and Marc Gasol. I can see that logic. Dillon Brooks played well last season, and if Conley can get back healthy and work well with Jackson and Brooks, we are looking at a decent team in Memphis.
We should wait and see how the rest of the NBA Summer League goes though, and see if Jackson can be a star in it.
The Grizzlies’ next game is July 3rd verus the Utah Jazz. You can watch on NBA TV.
