DeMarco Murray came to the Tennessee Titans and helped develop a winning mindset. Now, Murray is set to retire and hopefully stick around in Tennessee

In 2015, the Tennessee Titans were coming off a terrible 3-13 season. They were bad from defense to offense, and even special teams was atrocious.

Then, they hired a General Manager named Jon Robinson who had a goal in mind of changing this franchise around. That is why Robinson traded for running back DeMarco Murray.

Murray came into Tennessee coming off a bad year in Philadelphia, but he had a few good years with the Dallas Cowboys. He knew Tennessee was the right fit because of then-head coach Mike Mularkey‘s “exotic smashmouth” offense.

In his first season in Tennessee, he did not disappoint. He became the first Titans 1,000 yard rusher since Chris Johnson, carrying the ball 293 times for an AFC-leading 1,287 yards. He also tacked on nine touchdowns and his third Pro Bowl of his career.

However, no one would have guessed that his career was coming to an end so soon. After two years in Tennessee, Murray decided to retire.

The Titans released Murray in the offseason after the 2017 season. He had interest from multiple teams, according to Schefter, but decided retirement was the best option. Titans fans appreciate Murray for helping change the culture and mindset of a team that only had 5 total wins in the previous two years of his arrival.

Murray’s definitely appreciated by the organization and the fans in Nashville.

What Could Be Next for Murray?

Most NFL players go into broadcasting when retiring, but I hope for something different for Murray. When he was signed to the Titans, Murray reportedly bought a house in Tennessee. No one buys a house somewhere without planning on staying, right?

That is why Murray should definitely stay in Tennessee and work with Derrick Henry and Dion Lewis. When the season ended, a handful of Titans fans said that Tennessee should keep Murray on the roster but have him back up and mentor Henry. With Murray retiring, he should consider being around the facility more and mentoring Henry and now Lewis.

This would be perfect, because Murray was a successful NFL running back and, quite frankly, Titans LB Derrick Morgan did say if someone can come in and help them, then do it. Why not Murray?

Next: This is why the Titans will shock the NFL.

Murray ran for 7,174 yards and 49 touchdowns in his seven year career. He was Offensive Player of the Year in 2014 and among the NFL’s top rushers in his first year as a Tennessee Titans running back. Murray probably would not mind helping out the Titans, and I bet the Titans would not mind having him around.
