Former Tennessee football star Josh Dobbs was officially named as the backup quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday.

Days after earning a spot on the Pittsburgh Steelers 53-man roster, Josh Dobbs, the former Tennessee football star, was officially named as the backup quarterback behind the veteran and two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback Ben Roethlisberger.

This is a huge step for Dobbs, the Steelers 4th round pick in the 2017 draft. Dobbs was kept on the Steelers 53-man roster after they cut veteran Landry Jones, who had backed up Roethlisberger for the last six seasons. The Steelers had a tough choice in choosing who to cut, but they didn’t want another team to end up with a backup quarterback with the talent and potential that Dobbs has.

The Steelers also drafted Mason Rudolph in the 3rd round in the 2018 draft, so many thought Dobbs would be the odd man out.

Dobbs impressed many people during the Steelers preseason games. He led the Steelers quarterbacks with 434 passing yards on 29-43 passing with four touchdowns and two interceptions. Like he did in a Tennessee jersey, he also looked impressive running the ball, including this touchdown in their final preseason game against the Carolina Panthers.

Dobbs is very deserving of this backup spot. He’s worked his butt off and has been doubted throughout his career. Many thought Dobbs had no chance of winning a roster spot heading into the season, especially with the Steelers drafting Rudolph, but Dobbs proved those doubters wrong by winning the backup spot.

Roethlisberger has a history of getting injured, so there is a good chance Dobbs will get to prove his worth during the season.

This news comes on the same day that former Vol and Pitt quarterback Nathan Peterman got the starting job for the Buffalo Bills. With the way that Butch Jones underused players at Tennessee, it comes as no surprise.

This tweet sums up Jones’ tenure at Tennessee.

Both quarterbacks are very deserving of the spots they earned and will have a chance to prove themselves as the NFL season begins on Sunday for both of their teams.
