The Nashville Predators starting goaltender, Pekka Rinne, left their matchup on Friday night with an undisclosed injury and will be on the IR for some time.

The Nashville Predators picked up a big win against the Calgary Flames on Friday night but it came with a cost. Reigning Vezina Trophy winner and starting goaltender, Pekka Rinne, left during the third period after Kevin Fiala skated into him.

Rinne, who has played in five games this season, boasting a 3-1 record, will miss some time, but it has currently not been released on how much time he will miss due to his injury. Since he was placed on the IR, he will miss at least the next couple of games.

Due to the injury, the Predators called up Miroslav Svoboda to back up Juuse Saros for the time being.

What This Means

The last thing you want as the Predators is to lose your starting goaltender. There are a few positive things you can take away from this current situation that the Nashville Predators are in.

If Rinne’s injury isn’t too big, he should have a while during the regular season to get back into the swing of things once he returns.

This injury will give Saros a time to shine. Saros has been a key piece for the Predators during the last two seasons and will get the chance to prove his worth and show that he is the future of the Predators franchise.

He’s already had one great performance in net for Nashville, shutting out the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday night, as the Predators won that matchup 3-0. Saros on the year has played in four games, winning all four of those games. He has been stellar in goal, stopping 86 of the 91 shots he has faced, good for a .945 save %.

Saros will likely get a few shots this week as well, as the Predators face the San Jose Sharks, New Jersey Devils, and the Edmonton Oilers throughout the course of the week. We will also likely see Svoboda in net at some point during the week to give Saros some rest.
