Tennessee Football: 3 Takeaways from the Win vs Kentucky
The Tennessee Volunteers pulled off the upset of the No. 11 ranked Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday. Here are three takeaways from that win!
The Tennessee Volunteers won their second game against a ranked team this season, as they beat the No. 11 ranked Kentucky Wildcats, 24-7, on Saturday.
The Volunteers played a complete game for likely the first time this season, with them winning all phases of the football game.
Kentucky headed into this game with a 7-2 record, but a week removed from a crushing defeat against the Georgia Bulldogs, where they had a chance to clinch the SEC East.
The Wildcats have been under the radar for a few years but really emerged this season, mainly behind two key players. Benny Snell Jr., the Wildcats senior running back, entered Saturday’s game with 199 rushes for 1,033 yards, good for second in the SEC. Josh Allen, the Wildcats star linebacker, entered the game with 59 tackles, as well as 14 TFL’s and 10 sacks. The Volunteers did a great job of shutting down both of these players, which was a key reason the Volunteers pulled off the so-called upset.
This win was much needed for the football program. Not only does it give Jeremy Pruitt his second Top 25 of the season, but it also puts the Volunteers one win away from a bowl game with two games left.
Tennessee will host the Missouri Tigers next Saturday with a chance to head to a bowl game, just a year removed from their worst record in Tennessee history. If they don’t win this matchup, they will have a chance to go to Nashville and get a win against the Vanderbilt Commodores. No matter the team’s record in that matchup, you can almost guarantee Vanderbilt Stadium being mostly Volunteers fans.
