Tennessee Football: Will McBride announces decision to transfer
Will McBride, the Tennessee Volunteers third string quarterback, announced his decision to transfer on Wednesday night, leaving just two QB’s on the roster.
Sophomore quarterback Will McBride announced his decision to transfer on Wednesday night from the Tennessee football program. The sophomore saw action in just two games during his two seasons on Rocky Top.
McBride saw action in two games during his true freshman season on Rocky Top. His first appearance came in the Southern Miss game after Jarrett Guarantano suffered an injury and Quentin Dormady announced his decision to transfer.
Hew saw his first career start last season on the road against the Missouri Tigers, completing 16 passes on 32 attempts for 139 passing yards, while adding on one touchdown pass and two interceptions. He also rushed the ball 14 times for a total of 63 yards that game.
With the graduation of Keller Chryst and the transfer of McBride, the Tennessee Volunteers now just have two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster. Guarantano will be a redshirt junior this upcoming season while JT Shrout will be a redshirt freshman.
What this means
Like I mentioned in the paragraph above, the Volunteers now just have two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster. Tennessee currently has one quarterback committed, and is in the running for another quarterback set to announce his commitment to Michigan or Tennessee today.
Brian Maurer is the lone quarterback commit for the Tennessee Volunteers in the 2019 recruiting class. Maurer is currently rated as a three-star on 247Sports. Maurer’s final decision came down to the Volunteers and West Virginia. During his senior campaign, Maurer finished with 3,537 passing yards, completing 280 of his 428 passing attempts, adding on 34 passing touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. He also rushed for 466 rushing yards and tacked on six rushing touchdowns.
Harrison Bailey is set to announce his committment today at 2:45 PM Eastern time. Bailey is a four-star quarterback from Marietta, Georgia. Bailey is a 2020 recruit, but there have been some rumors about him reclassifying to the 2019 recruiting class, making him eligible to play either for Michigan or Tennessee next season. The junior quarterback is ranked 59th overall in the 2020 class, as well as being ranked the third best pro-style quarterback.
It will be interesting to see the quarterback competition of Rocky Top next season. It seems to be pointing in the direction of Guarantano again, but Shrout could potentially work his way up and take over the starting position. Shrout will have the Orange and White Game to prove himself and showcase his talents in front of Volunteer fans.
If both Maurer and Bailey end up coming to Tennessee, it will be interesting to see if they can come in and compete for the starting job.
