Tennessee Titans: What the Titans need to improve on to be successful in 2019
The Tennessee Titans have been up and down the past few years, but there’s one thing specifically that they could improve on to be successful in 2019.
Every team is going to have multiple small problems throughout their team, but if they can fix all the big holes, then the smaller holes don’t look as bad or have as much of an effect on the team.
For the Titans, the big hole they need to fix in 2019 is the passing game. If Marcus Mariota can get the offense going early and open up the passing game, we could see a massive jump in production.
I’m calling out the passing game because last season Derrick Henry proved he can be one of the best running backs in the NFL he just needs some help from Mariota.
If the offense is struggling to move the ball through the air, then the defense is going to know the offense is going to run the ball.
Mariota is in a contract year, so it’s now or never for him with the Titans. He needs to prove he can be the franchise quarterback many believe him to be and if the passing game can click throughout the season, he won’t have a problem doing that.
Mariota started on fire in his first couple of seasons. He threw for 45 touchdowns and 19 interceptions. That has dipped his last two seasons as he has thrown for 24 touchdowns and 23 interceptions.
Mariota threw for 2,528 yards, 11 touchdowns, and eight interceptions last season so even though he was hurt for a part of last season there is room for improvement.
The 2,500 yards is the lowest number in Mariota’s NFL career. It’s crucial for Mariota to get back on track in 2019.
He threw 21 more touchdowns in his first two seasons in two fewer games. He proved he had the potential to be one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.
Mariota is now on his third head coach since coming into the NFL in 2015. He’s gone through even more offensive coordinators. This is one reason he hasn’t been able to excel on the field.
With new coaches come new schemes and systems, and it makes it almost impossible for a quarterback to succeed under those circumstances.
Mariota and his receivers have been clicking in practice so it looks like the Titans could turn the offense around in 2019. But practice is different than games, so we’re not going to know how well they’re clicking until they play this fall.
The key to a successful 2019 is turning the passing game around, and Mariota is the guy to do it. Injuries have plagued him, but that can’t be an excuse if you plan to be successful. This could be an exciting season for the Titans, and I think they can surprise a lot of people this year.
