Athlon Sports has released a new, fresh bowl projection for Tennessee, and they have the Vols to play in the Belk Bowl against Virginia Tech.

Tennessee hasn’t been to a bowl game since 2016 but year two in the Jeremy Pruitt era is looking good. Tennessee is slowly gaining respect from national writers with Pruitt and bowl projections are coming in left and right.

The Vols have been projected to go to a couple of different bowls, and the newest Athlon Sports bowl projection has Tennessee playing in the Belk Bowl against Virginia Tech.

You may remember the last time the Vols and Hokies faced off in the Battle at Bristol in 2016. Tennessee went on to route Va Tech 45-24 in front of 156,990 people.

That was such a fun game and was supposed to propel Tennessee to a New Year’s Six bowl game or maybe even the College Football Playoff. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case and with Justin Fuente still at the helm at Va Tech that adds a little extra something to the matchup.

But it is pretty wide open for the Vols when it comes to possible bowl games. If they can reach bowl eligibility in 2019 they could go to any bowl they’re eligible for.

I see the Vols having six or seven different options this bowl season. From the Birmingham Bowl to the Tennessee and Florida bowls, their options are going to be wide open, and it’s mostly due to the fans.

Tennessee is one of the more sought after SEC teams when it comes to bowl games because Tennessee fans travel and there Vol fans everywhere.

Regardless of where the Vols go, I would expect Tennessee fans to pack the house. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Vols finish in the six or seven-win range then they will try to go to the Liberty Bowl in Memphis.

Next. Grant Williams and Admiral Schofield have successful debuts. dark

Athletic Director Phillip Fulmer has already expressed he wants to play in Memphis more and a 2019 bowl game could be a great way to reintroduce the Vols to Memphis.
