Tennessee Football: Jim Chaney is helping Guarantano “Lots”
Tennessee QB Jarrett Guarantano gave a one-word tweet to describe how new offensive coordinator Jim Chaney is helping him and the offense.
One of the biggest acquisitions this spring wasn’t a signee or grad transfer. It was offensive coordinator Jim Chaney coming back to Tennessee from Georgia to take over play-calling duties on offense.
There have already been reports that Chaney has drastically changed the offense for the better and Jarrett Guarantano is looking good in the new offense. JG’s latest tweet reassures that.
Peter Burns of ESPN asked what would be “the biggest storyline for this year’s CFB season that you think it totally under the radar right now.” He received a response asking how Chaney would impact the offense in Knoxville.
Burns brought up how Chaney helped Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm, and if you recall back to Chaney’s time at Tennessee, the offense would’ve been abysmal without him. Guarantano’s response was priceless and can only get you excited for this season.
Oh man, if Guarantano comes at slinging the ball this year, it could be really exciting to watch. Last season Guarantano threw just three interceptions and 12 touchdowns.
Even though the interception number is low, the touchdown number is also small. But we all know this, Guarantano is a conservative pass thrower. He doesn’t throw it downfield too often, and he’s played a lot of small ball and focused on protecting the football.
Jeremy Pruitt is a defensive coach, so if Tennessee and Guarantano want to kickstart the offense, they can’t be afraid to lean on the defense now and then. Turnovers are a part of the game, and they are bound to happen.
I’d rather average an interception a game and three passing touchdowns than the 12-3 touchdown to interception ratio we saw last year.
Another thing Chaney has been working on is the offensive line. If JG is going to be successful in 2019, he can’t be getting hit every other play. I think that is an achievable task for Chaney and the offense along with getting Guarantano going in the air.
It’s going to be an exciting year for the Vols in 2019. This year is supposed to be the year they turn things around, and if they don’t, it could get ugly.
