Tennessee Titans: Ceiling and floor for Marcus Mariota’s fifth season
Marcus Mariota is about to start his fifth season in the NFL, and based on previous successful quarterbacks; he should have high expectations.
Marcus Mariota is entering his fifth season in the league and based on recent successful quarterback numbers we should see a big jump in his numbers this year.
USA Today’s Titans Wire broke it down for us giving us stats from quarterbacks like Cam Newton, Matt Ryan, and Drew Brees who all had big jumps in year five.
For example, Newton went 15-1 in his fifth season and led the Panthers to the Super Bowl, Ryan went 13-3, and Brees went just 10-6, but he was a Pro Bowler and a first-team All-Pro.
If Mariota can make a jump similar to any of those, I think it would be safe to say he will be staying in Nashville for a long time.
I think the Titans can be a very good football team in 2019 and after seeing those stats, I’d say the Titans ceiling with Mariota at quarterback is 12-4 this year.
But for every ceiling, there is a floor, and the Titans floor isn’t good, to be frank. The Titans have gone 9-7 the past three seasons so putting the floor there may be fair.
Mariota has been slowly declining since the 2016 season, so if he continues at that pace, the Titans will not be able to reach nine wins this season.
With that being said if Mariota continues his decline, I would say the floor for the Titans in 2019 is 6-10. This is mostly due to a difficult schedule and the AFC South being so good this year.
If Mariota is the real deal, he will be able to overcome the tough schedule and lead the Titans offense to a solid season. I know it’s not all on Mariota, but the defense is going to be good this year so it could be up to the offense to keep up throughout the game.
The Titans can be very good this year. They can also be very bad. The offense looked good in their first preseason game, and we’ll learn more about Mariota’s situation as the preseason progresses. Hopefully, we will learn good things.
