Tennessee Football: Vols get first win despite still sloppy play

Tennessee dominated in their game against Chattanooga with a 45-0 win despite some more sloppy play on both offense and defense.

I know, I know I’m supposed to be positive after a win like this but even if I’m positive about this game what about the other two games where we left a lot out on the field. It’s all about improving, and the Vols did take a few steps in the right direction, but there’s still a ways to go.

Jarrett Guarantano threw an incompletion on his first pass play but went perfect after that. A big improvement from the last two weeks but he still looked to be throwing the ball too late. There were a few plays that would have been interceptions against anyone else on our schedule.

But there was improvement nonetheless at the quarterback position, and that’s all we asked for. The offensive line also was able to dominate in the trenches when the starters were in.

We also got to see Brian Maurer and J.T. Shrout this game. Both quarterbacks showed some flash but weren’t able to separate themselves from the other or Guarantano, at least in my opinion.

Bought wins like this are always nice to have, especially in Tennessee’s situation when you desperately needed something to go right for them.

But with that in mind, it’s always hard to judge how well the team actually performed when you play any FCS opponent. I think the team did a pretty good job overall, though.

The defense looked really good and forced a lot of punts and turnovers. The special teams unit also blocked a punt to add to the total of four turnovers on the game.

I think we did a lot of things right, but there are also multiple places where we still need to improve. We will be able to more easily see what we need to work on next game when we head to Gainesville against a much better Florida team.

Overall we might as well celebrate the first win of the season and might be the only win for a while, so take it in while you can. The only thing I ask is for the same team to show up with that energy against Florida next week.
