Tennessee Football: We’re going to be alright
The Tennessee Volunteers were able to keep it close for most of the game, but they ultimately couldn’t keep up with Georgia and lost 43-14.
This Tennessee football team isn’t very good. That’s not entirely Jeremy Pruitt‘s fault, but he’s trying to fix what is now his problem.
The 2017 recruiting class turned out to be pretty bad, so Pruitt is trying to fix everything with a corrupt recruiting class mixed in there with the previous coach’s mindset.
For the guys Pruitt has recruited and brought in, I think they’re all in on Pruitt, and they’ll do anything for him. The freshmen especially looked pretty good in the Georgia game. They fought until the very end on both sides of the ball.
That was amazing to see on the offensive side of the ball, where we’ve looked dull all season. Brian Maurer came in and gave us a spark on offense and kept us in the game for three quarters.
If Maurer had any experience under his belt, he might’ve been able to inch us closer in the third quarter, but the Georgia defense was too good. For his first start, though, I think he did a good job. I would hope that Pruitt and the coaching staff leave him in for the remainder of the season.
The entire team showed some toughness on Saturday night, and they proved they can hang with some of the best teams in the country. They were in striking distance going into the fourth quarter, so they still had a shot at making a miraculous comeback.
The Vols might’ve been able to complete that comeback, but their defense simply could not match what the Georgia offense was doing. Tennessee’s front seven couldn’t get any pressure on Jake Fromm solely due to being so much smaller than Georgia’s offensive line.
From Georgia State to Georgia, you can tell there’s a difference in how this team is playing. The first two games of the season, it looked like the players were already out on Pruitt, but now it seems like they’re more bought in than they have been since he got there.
I don’t expect this team to continue to improve and find a way to beat Alabama, but the next team up is Missississippi State, and that’s a winnable game for Tennessee in Neyland.
Mississippi State beat Kentucky but lost to Kansas State and Auburn, so they’re struggling a bit too. They’re not struggling near as bad as Tennessee, but if the Vols play as they did against Georgia, they’ll have a chance to beat Mississippi State.
You may not like the outcome of four of Tennessee’s games so far this season, but you have to admit the team is looking better now than they did six weeks ago. Pruitt got rid of some bad guys in the locker room, and suddenly, this team almost looks like they belong in the SEC again.
