JT Shrout could be up for his first career start at Tennessee this Saturday against South Carolina if Brian Maurer isn’t available.

Jarrett Guarantano would be an easy choice to be your starter this Saturday against South Carolina if he didn’t go rogue on the one-yard line that led to a fumble and an immediate Alabama touchdown. Now, the Vols might turn to JT Shrout for South Carolina.

After that, I don’t think Tennessee can start Guarantano anymore for the remainder of the season unless they absolutely have to.

The Vols even tested out the wildcat with Jauan Jennings and Ty Chandler at quarterback, and at this point, I’d rather have Jennings run the triple option or something than have JG under center for another snap.

I think every fan lost any sliver of confidence they had in JG after the Alabama game, and the same might be said for the coaching staff, too.

The coaches currently want the ball out of Guarantano’s hands as much as possible, so Shrout very well could be the next starting quarterback for the Vols.

The safe move might be to start Guarantano and split time and hope Tim Jordan and Chandler can carry the Vols offense for a few scores and pray the defense can prevent South Carolina from scoring, but why not try something different.

I don’t know how good Shrout is, and he may be absolutely awful, but if we can play Shrout in this game to prepare him for the rest of the season, then I don’t see why that wouldn’t be the move.

If you told me we had to play Shrout for the rest of the season and Brian Maurer was done, but Shrout would get you to six wins, then I’d take it all day long.

To be honest, if Shrout doesn’t work out, then just run the wildcat or find creative ways to run the ball on every play. I don’t want to see JG on the field in a Tennessee uniform ever again. He doesn’t deserve to play another snap at Tennessee.

Next. I’ll stand by Pruitt on face mask grab if no one else will. dark

Whatever happens, I hope Maurer is going to be alright, and we can get him back before the Kentucky, Missouri, and Vanderbilt games and try to go on a run with him.
