Survive and advance is a common theme for a lot of teams in the postseason, and Tennessee basketball’s Lady Vols did just that on Thursday.

Tennessee Lady Vols basketball gets first SEC Tournament win thanks to a late-game surge as 11-seed Missouri gave the Lady Vols more than what they wanted.

Although the Lady Vols did struggle throughout the game, they did secure the 64-51 win in the fourth quarter.

The first half wasn’t so kind to the Lady Vols, though. For most of the first half, Tennessee couldn’t get anything going to save their life and trailed by 13 points in the first half and 34-26 at halftime.

It looked like after a pretty good season; the Lady Vols were going to get embarrassed in their first and only SEC Tournament game. Luckily for them, the second half was a completely different story.

In the second half, Tennessee held the Tigers to a mere 17 points. The third quarter was the biggest for the Lady Vols as they outscored Missouri 23-6.

Now with the Vols back in this game, they needed to finish off Missouri in the fourth quarter. Leading by ten to start the final quarter, the Lady Vols didn’t give Missouri a chance to think about coming back.

Tennessee continued to push its lead in the fourth quarter and outscored Missouri in the final quarter 15-11 to finish off the once-hopeful Tigers.

Rae Burrell and Renia Davis were the top scorers of the night and helped lead the Vols to victory. Burrell finished with 16 points, and Davis finished with 14 points.

Now with the first win out of the way, the Lady Vols will have a much tougher test in its second game of the SEC Tournament as they will face 6-seed Kentucky.

If the Lady Vols open the game like they did against Missouri, then Tennessee will have no chance, and a second-half comeback might not be possible.
