Tennessee Football has an interesting QB competition coming their way, but quarterback Brian Maurer might’ve given us a hint who the starter will be.

Throughout the 2019 season, we saw the quarterback position struggle to find consistency. Jarrett Guarantano started the season as the starting quarterback and went 1-4 to start the season.

Brian Maurer took over the role against Georgia and for the first time, we saw some life in the Tennessee offense for the first time against decent competition.

Over the next couple of weeks, Maurer had some injuries and some scares, so naturally, JG returned as the starting quarterback. He took over mid-game against Alabama, a game that Tennessee could’ve won.

A fumble on the goal line from JG lost the game. Tennessee was down, but not out. The Vols proceeded to go on a run with JG at quarterback.

Tennessee went on to win its final six games of the season with JG at quarterback, including the bowl game against Indiana.

So knowing all of that and throwing freshman quarterback Harrison Bailey into the mix means we could see a long quarterback battle leading up to the season.

On Sunday morning, volreport on Instagram posted a picture of JG, Bailey, and Maurer. They posed the question, “Who do you want starting at QB September 5th?

That seems like a pretty basic question, but the answer could cause some controversy or debate. Especially if one of the quarterbacks in question answers a different quarterback.

Maurer took it upon himself to comment on who he thinks will be the starter for Week 1, and he didn’t pick himself. “I got JG,” Maurer wrote in the comment section.

It could’ve just been a joke or a way to rile up Vol fans while most are sitting at home with nothing to do since everything is shut down. Or he could’ve given his honest opinion on who he thinks the coaching staff will make the starter for the 2020 season.

Next. Tennessee Football is a contender for top QB and LB in America. dark

Either way, I don’t think it’s a matter of Maurer not wanting to compete or thinking that there’s no way he could get the starting job. I think he knows he can win the starting job, but he thinks that the coaches will give it to JG over him and Bailey.
