Tennessee Football: You shouldn’t be surprised Trey Smith is getting elite preseason recognition
Tennessee Football’s Trey Smith is getting elite preseason recognition ahead of the 2020 season, and you shouldn’t be surprised.
Trey Smith is no doubt the best offensive lineman on Tennessee football’s roster, and now he’s getting recognition as one of the best offensive linemen in the SEC and in the country.
Smith has struggled with some health issues in the past, but even after overcoming those issues, he’s still seen as a top offensive lineman in the SEC. There aren’t too many players that can claim that after having a comeback like Smith had where some people thought he might never play another snap again.
ESPN and SEC Network analyst Cole Cubelic has been putting together a couple of lists while things are a bit slow in the sports world.
Last week, Cubelic tweeted out his top-five offensive lines in the SEC, and you can check out our breakdown of that here.
Cubelic continues to focus on the trenches as he just released his top-five SEC guards, and Trey Smith is leading the charge in the SEC among his fellow guards.
The average fan might think that a Georgia or Alabama guard should be ranked higher, but if you’ve watched Trey Smith play, then you know that he’s one of the best that the SEC has to offer.
Smith also received All-SEC preseason honors for the 2020 season, but he’s also getting national recognition. He has also been named a preseason All-American and a top-50 player in the country.
The preseason recognition isn’t stopping there for Trey Smith. Now, the Walter Camp Football Foundation announced Smith as a First-Team Preseason All-American on Thursday.
It looks like Smith’s senior season is going to live up to the hype that we hoped it would when he first announced that he will be signing with Tennessee on National Signing Day.
He has been Tennessee’s anchor on the offensive line and been a leader in the locker room. He earned All-SEC First-Team honors after his Junior year, so I can only expect him to take the next step and finish the season as an All-American and dominate opposing defensive lines.
You shouldn’t be surprised that Smith is getting all of these honors. Watch a little game film, and you’ll know why. SEC defenses are not going to be ready for Tennesse’s offensive line this fall.
