Tennessee Titans: Will Derrick Henry be the NFL rushing champion in 2020?
Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry is looking to be the NFL’s rushing champion for the second season in a row.
Derrick Henry is coming off the best season of his career since being drafted by the Tennessee Titans in 2016. Henry rushed for 1,540 rushing yards and 16 rushing touchdowns last season, which was good enough to be the NFL Rushing Champion.
Henry will look to lead the league in rushing yards and touchdowns for the second season in a row, but Bleacher Report doesn’t think he will quite be able to do it.
Maurice Moton of Bleacher Report has Henry leading the league in rushing touchdowns, but not rushing yards in 2020.
Moton laid out who he thought would be statistical leaders in the NFL for the 2020 season, including the leaders in rushing yards, passing yards, sacks, and interceptions.
"“Since 2018, Henry lists second in rushing touchdowns with 28,” Moton wrote. “After he registered 303 carries in 2019, the coaching staff may lighten his load with rookie third-rounder Darrynton Evans on the roster.“Still, offensive coordinator Arthur Smith should continue to pound the ball with his lead ball-carrier within the red zone. Henry logged 13 rushing touchdowns inside the opposing team’s 20-yard line last year. He epitomizes the Titans’ physical offense, so we shouldn’t expect the coaching staff to move away from him at the end of drives.”"
Some notable stat leaders Moton has are New York Giants running back Saquon Barkley leading the league in rushing yards, Dak Prescott leading in passing yards, and Patrick Mahomes leading in passing touchdowns.
The Titans running game could take a step back this year with the changes surrounding the offense and the loss of tackle Jack Conklin in free agency.
Moton has Henry finishing at least third in the NFL in rushing yards. He listed Christian McCaffrey as finishing second.
If Henry is going to lead the league in rushing touchdowns, then he’s going to likely be competing to have the most rushing yards as well.
Henry is the cornerstone of the Titans offense, and without him, the Titans don’t make the comeback they did last season, and they won’t be in the picture for another playoff run this year. He’s going to have another great season, and he’s going to be a big part of the Titans’ success in 2020.
