Tennessee Titans: Kevin Byard continues to prove he’s one of the best safeties in the league
Kevin Byard has proved he’s more than just a “fan” and has turned himself into one of the best safeties in the league, and he continues to dominate.
There’s no doubt that in recent years Tennessee Titans’ safety Kevin Byard has been one of the best safeties in the NFL. He’s continued to be a leader on the field and in the locker room while also putting up dominant numbers, even when the team is struggling.
Somehow, someway, Byard continues to be underrated by people throughout the league and the national media. He was snubbed of the 2020 NFL Top 100 list, which was a huge shock to Titans fans. How can a safety that’s routinely ranked as a top-ten, and even the top-five, safety not make the NFL Top 100 list?
He has gotten some respect from a few different avenues, just not the national respect that Titans fans believe he deserves. Mark Schofield of Touchdown Wire ranked Byard as the No. 3 safety and No. 39 player in the league. Patrik Walker of CBS Sports has ranked Byard as the No. 9 safety in the league.
Regardless of what others think throughout the country, you can’t deny facts and what Byard is doing on the field.
Pro Football Focus looked at WAR (Win Above Replacement) and found that Byard is the fourth-most valuable safety in the league since 2017.
Byard is heading into year one of his new five-year, $70.5 million contract extension that the Titans signed him to ahead of the 2019 season. That’s a well-deserved raise for one of the best safeties in the league.
Byard is a key part of Tennessee’s defense, and he’s a leader in the locker room. There’s no doubt when it comes to the Titans, Byard is an important part of the team, and if the TItans were to ever lose him, then they’d take a huge hit in production. There are certain things that team leaders to that can’t be replaced by signing another safety. That’s why Kevin Byard is elite.
