The Tennessee Titans were expected to have 2020 seventh-round draft pick Cole McDonald compete for the backup spot, but he’s been unexpectedly cut.

Many people were excited when the Tennessee Titans drafted Hawaii quarterback Cole McDonald with their seventh-round draft pick. It seemed like he had a lot of potential and could serve as a decent backup quarterback for the time being.

Tennessee fans were excited, and that wasn’t any different with Titans head coach Mike Vrabel. Just the other day, Vrabel gave high praise when talking about McDonald.

"“We know that Cole was going to be a developmental player. There’s a lot of skill set to like — size, ability to extend plays,” Vrabel said of McDonald."

I guess that didn’t quite resonate with the front office as the Titans have cut McDonald and replaced him with veteran backup quarterback Trevor Siemian.

Siemian has NFL experience in both a backup and starting quarterback role, which could be why the Titans chose to sign him and cut McDonald. Even some people in the media were a bit shocked by the move.

The Titans were expected to bring in a veteran to likely take the QB2 spot and help teach the younger quarterback the ways of the NFL, but I don’t think anyone expected for McDonald to be cut and replaced. At least not this early.

But the NFL is a business, and no one is going to get in the way of that, especially a seventh-round pick. With McDonald now gone, it seems like he might not have been as good as the Titans had hoped, at least compared to fellow backup quarterback Logan Woodside.

As exciting as McDonald seemed to be, I’m sure he’ll find another home somewhere else. With the limitations already in place right now, the likelihood of him signing somewhere soon is probably slim, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he continues to work out and improve his game that he can work his way onto a roster next summer.
