Tennessee Football offensive tackle, Trey Smith, soars up 247Sports’ player rankings to become a top-20 player in college football.

Trey Smith had high expectations when he decided to sign with Tennessee football in 2017. He was a five-star coming out of high school and ESPN’s No. 1 player in the country.

He lived up to those expectations in his freshman season as he was named a Freshman All-American in 2017 and continued the success in 2019 when he was named a First-Team All-SEC selection.

The hype will continue through his senior year as some way-too-early mock drafts have Smith being drafted in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Now, Smith has been ranked in the top-20 players in college football by 247Sports. He jumped eleven spots from No. 31 to No. 20 as 247Sports and Chris Hummer updated its top-50 players in the country.

"“When able to play, Smith is among the nation’s top overall lineman,” Hummer said. “A 6-foot-6, 335-pound mauler capable of playing tackle and guard, Smith earned All-SEC honors a season ago. He didn’t allow a sack in 2019 and also graded out as the top run blocker in the SEC, per PFF College. A blood clot issue disrupted Smith’s sophomore season and endangered his career, but he came back with authority last season and projects as one of the top draft prospects in the 2021 cycle.”"

I can’t blame people for hyping up Smith ahead of the NFL Draft. He’s lived up to the hype that he was given coming out of high school, and I expect him to do the same when he gets to the NFL.

He still has to prove that he can be an elite offensive lineman for more than one season, and he will look to do that this fall. If Smith can continue to dominate in a ten-game all-SEC schedule, then he will definitely earn a spot in the first round of the 2021 draft.
