CBS Sports has Tennessee Football going bowling this fall
Tennessee Football has an opportunity to go to a big-time bowl game this year, and CBS Sports has them doing just that.
Tennessee football and the SEC season will look a little different this year with a ten-game season consisting only of in-conference games. With the season being only ten games, the Vols have two fewer opportunities to reach the six-win mark to officially be eligible for a bowl game.
With the lack of teams playing this fall, I would assume some five-win, and maybe a few four-win teams will go to a bowl game just because there won’t be enough six-win teams.
Assuming Tennessee is able to win at least six games, the Vols will also benefit from the lack of bowl-eligible teams playing this fall. If the Vols can have a really good season, they could be playing in their first New Year’s Six bowl since college football moved to the playoff format.
Jerry Palm of CBS Sports is already trying to break down bowl season, and he has released his preseason bowl predictions as we head into September.
In Palm’s prediction, he doesn’t predict that the Vols make it to a New Year’s Six bowl, but it does seem like he’s expecting the Vols to have a pretty good season.
Palm has the Vols going to Orlando, Florida, to play in the Citrus Bowl against the hometown team, the UCF Knights. In this scenario, UCF is a replacement team, which Palm defines as “the highest-rated champion from the American Athletic Conference, Conference USA, and Sun Belt will be selected to play in one of the Selection Committee Bowl Games.”
Tennessee could have two other Tennessee teams join them for Bowl season. MTSU is predicted to go to the Mobile Bowl to play Georgia Southern, and Vanderbilt is predicted to play in the Birmingham Bowl against Georgia Tech.
The Vols have become familiar with bowl games in Florida in recent years. Since 2015, Tennessee has been to four bowl games, and of those four bowl games, three of them have been in the state of Florida in either the Taxslayer Gator Bowl or the Outback Bowl.
Based on Palm’s predictions, the Vols could be on the edge of being a New Year’s Six bowl team. After all, if they can have a better season than Texas A&M, Florida, or Auburn, then they could earn a spot in one of those bowl games. And yes, Tennessee has three scheduled opponents predicted to go to New Year’s Six bowl games with two opponents in the College Football Playoff. This season should be fun.
