Tennessee Titans survive second scare in as many weeks
The Tennessee Titans escaped with another win on Sunday after the Jacksonville Jaguars pushed to complete the comeback.
The Tennessee Titans held a two-touchdown lead over the Jacksonville Jaguars in Sunday’s game heading into the fourth quarter. With Jacksonville driving, they were looking to complete the comeback and sneak out of Nashville with a win.
After the Jags were able to tie the game, the Titans had one more opportunity to put points on the board and win the game.
The Titans got the ball with 3:29 remaining in the game, and Tannehill was able to put the Titans in field goal range. The game was left up to Stephen Gostkowski‘s foot for the second game in a row.
Gostkowski had a much better game this week compared to last week as he went 2-for-2 on field goals and 1-for-2 on PATs. He knocked through the go-ahead field goal to give the Titans a 33-30 lead with 1:36 remaining in the game.
The Titans left just enough time on the clock for Gardner Minshew and company to complete the comeback or at least force overtime.
The comeback ended three plays into the Jags’ final drive with an interception by Titans outside linebacker Harold Landry. Two quarterback kneels later, and the clock expired, and the Titans escaped with another close victory.
Knowing the Titans’ history, I was nearly convinced that the Titans were going to blow its lead to the projected worst team in the NFL, but the defense was clutch when it needed to be, and so was Gostkowski.
For Gostkowski, I won’t lie, I was ready for the Titans to cut him after his abysmal Week 1 performance, but he redeemed himself in Week 2. He looked like the elite kicker that the Patriots knew as he nailed a 49 and 51-yard field goal on Sunday.
The Titans’ offense also had a pretty decent day. Ryan Tannehill finished the day with 239 passing yards and four touchdowns, and Derrick Henry finished with 84 rushing yards on 25 carries.
We once again saw how big of a player Henry is on the field as Jaguars defensive backs would jump on Henry as he continued to power through until someone was smart enough to tackle below the shoulders.
Next week, the Titans will head to Minnesota to take on the struggling Vikings. The game is scheduled to kick off at noon, and the Vikings will look to get its first win of the season after losing to the Packers and Colts to start the season.
