Tennessee Football takes care of business in South Carolina and escapes Williams-Brice Stadium with a 31-27 win over the Gamecocks.

Tennessee football got off to a rocky start in its season opener, but the Vols were able to bounce back throughout the rest of the game and take care of business on the road. The Vols’ 31-27 win was impressive in some areas and not-so-impressive in others.

The offense struggled throughout a lot of the game, although the offense was able to score 24 points, with one touchdown coming from a Henry To’o To’o pick-six in the second quarter. That was the only score from either team in the second quarter and it gave the Vols a 14-7 lead that they carried into halftime.

Jarrett Guarantano seemed to not improve much when it comes to his accuracy on short passes. He consistently overthrew his receivers throughout the entire night. I thought it might be something that he could overcome after halftime, but it could be an issue for the rest of the season.

Guarantano finished the night with 259 passing yards and a touchdown, but if he were able to connect on the passes he overthrew, then he likely would’ve thrown for over 300 yards and put himself in a position to throw for multiple touchdowns throughout the night.

The running game, on the other hand, brought some consistency with Ty Chandler and Eric Gray splitting playing time. Chandler finished the night with 13 carries for 86 yards, and Gray finished with 12 carries for 40 yards.

The Vols defense, on the other hand, looked pretty impressive for most of the night. The defense bailed out the offense a lot throughout the night. If the defense had an off night, then we could be talking about this game being a loss instead of a win.

It definitely wasn’t a pretty win, but a win at the end of the day. The Vols will move on and take on the Missouri Tigers next week.
