Tennessee Football fans will have a football-less Thanksgiving weekend
Tennessee Football fans won’t have to stress over losing to Vanderbilt this weekend with the SEC postponing the Vols’ game.
There has been a number of postponed games this football season due to COVID-19, and it looks like Tennessee football will have its second game postponed this season.
The SEC has announced that Tennessee’s matchup against Vanderbilt this Saturday has been postponed. This isn’t due to COVID-19, which makes the postponement a bit weird. I would think that the SEC would want to play all of the games as soon as possible, so teams can avoid the cold weather as we get closer to flu season.
SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey released a statement on the postponed game and said that the SEC wants to continue to be flexible as the regular season starts winding down.
"“As we continue to adapt to the current realities, it important to remain flexible as we move forward in the final weeks of the season,” said SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey in a statement. “Contact tracing continues to be the biggest contributing factor to game interruptions. We will continue to manage the remaining weeks of the football schedule to allow for as many games to be played as possible.”"
After watching Tennessee play against Auburn this past Saturday, it might be a good thing that the Vols get another week off before preparing for their next game. After last week, some fans were nervous about losing to Vanderbilt, which could still happen, but the week off will ease some fans’ concerns.
With this game being moved to the final date on the SEC’s season schedule, December 19, there’s a possibility this game doesn’t even get played. The SEC said it wants to make sure all 14 teams play its full ten game schedule, but moving the game so far from now, who knows where we’ll be in the middle of December with the pandemic.
The Vols will now look to December 5 when the Florida Gators come to town. The last time the Vols and Gators played in December, the Vols came out on top in 2001 by a score of 34-32 in Gainsville. Who knows if another miracle looms in the distance.
