The Tennessee Vols are set to take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets to open the 2017 season on September 4.

Butch Jones and the Tennessee Vols started fall camp a week before the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, and that could give them an advantage in the season opening game between the two teams.

We still have nearly a month to go before the season starts, but as of right now, Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson doesn’t think his team is ready to play.

Here’s what Johnson had to say after practice on Wednesday when he was asked if likes what he’s seeing out of his team.

"Not really, it was sloppy. It’s sloppy all the way around. We’ve got a long way to go……We certainly aren’t close to being ready to play right now."

Coaches are known for never being satisfied with their team, but this is still a pretty strong statement by Johnson.

(Maybe that extra week of prep will be an advantage for the Vols.)

And for what it’s worth, this isn’t the first statement that Johnson has made this off-season that’s puzzled me a bit.

I mean, he’s right that Georgia Tech has no idea what Tennessee is going to do. The Vols are going to have a new quarterback, and a new offensive coordinator calling plays, but game planning for your season opening opponent is one of the benefits of the off-season and knowing who your next game is against.

I suspect Johnson, who usually provides great soundbites, is being a bit coy this off-season.

Either way, the Vols are going to have a battle on their hands when they go to Atlanta to take on the Yellow Jackets on September 4.

Beating Georgia Tech is a must for the Tennessee. They need all the momentum they can get in 2017 in order to unite a divided fan base.
