8. Brent Venables — Defensive coordinator at Clemson

Hiring Brent Venables as a head coach could either propel the Vols to greatness, or they could continue to languish in mediocrity as a result.

Venables is an attractive option because he has a significant amount of experience as a defensive coordinator on great staffs.

The Kansas native was an assistant on Bob Stoops’ staff at Oklahoma from 1999-2011. He’s been part of Dabo Swinney’s staff at Clemson since 2012.

Venables’ defenses almost always experience success — he’s been the defensive coordinator on two national championship teams.

But the lack of head coaching experience makes him a huge gamble.

I’m not sure that’s the kind of gamble the Vols can afford to take right now.

However, I’m absolutely taking Venables ahead of Dave Doeren and PJ Fleck if I’m John Currie.
