4. The Coaching Staff

Mike Vrabel is a loud, funny, and a player’s kind of coach. His former players raved about him, saying he is a great coach, great leader, and great mentor. Those are qualities you need in a coach, especially when your team’s stars are young, like the Titans’ case. There is one quality that we still yet to know if he has: Can he lead the Tennessee Titans?

Let’s face it, I am a nice guy, I think I am kind of funny too, and I definitely could do the mentor thing. But, that does not necessarily mean I can lead a team. Not to compare myself to Vrabel or anything.

The Titans fired a decent coach in Mike Mularkey. It is not bad to say that was a bold move. Mularkey was a great players’ coach. You could tell right from when he was hired as interim head coach that the players were willing to run through a brick wall for him.

The following two seasons, Mularkey and his crew went 9-7, giving Mularkey a 18-14 record in two full regular seasons. The Titans seemed to be headed in the right direction, but Titans’ ownership thought they needed to go a different route.

In came Vrabel. Vrabel is basically a younger and upgraded version of Mike Mularkey in terms of the type of coach he is. He is a players’ coach. The players will want to also run through a brick wall for him.

But can Vrabel meet the pretty mediocre, but good, bar set by Mularkey? Or will this risk hurt the Titans and set them back a few years? We will find out something this coming season, but one season does not answer those questions.
